In the username and password field, enter the username + password for the cPanel account, not for an FTP account that you manually created. SSH (Windows) and CyberDuck (Mac) are SFTP clients available for free.

In the server field, enter your domain name.

Be sure you choose SFTP from the drop-down menu.

When the Open Connection Dialog appears, you will be prompted to enter some login information. Free FTP clients also exist on Windows and you should be able to follow along.
